Meet Amanda Moore, Assistant Director of Intake, Assessment, and Zone Coordination

Growing up in Tilden Houses in Brownsville, Brooklyn, Amanda Moore always knew she wanted to work in public service. In the summers, she went to camp through her development’s community center and took part in the center’s after-school program: “The center gave us a place to go, and the staff were amazing! I’ll never forget how much support they gave to all the kids. I knew back then that public service was my calling and I wanted to give back to the community.”

Starting out as a community service aide at the community center in Riis Houses in Lower Manhattan, Ms. Moore rose through the ranks over the past 23 years at the Authority: “As a community service aide, I helped residents with homework and coordinating field trips. I loved it so much that I moved into a community associate role, then community coordinator, and then manager. Now, I’m an assistant director, overseeing intake, assessment, and Zone coordination with NYCHA’s Office of Resident Economic Empowerment & Sustainability (REES). I’ve only been in this role a short time, but my goal is to create more connections among my dynamic team of assessment specialists, referral associates, and Zone coordinators, and evolve as a department. I want to create a space where everyone can share their ideas and unique insights.”

Most importantly, Ms. Moore and her team are committed to connecting residents to vital resources and services, including employment and career advancement, adult education and vocational training, financial empowerment, and business development opportunities. “We partner with organizations throughout the city that provide training, employment resources, and workshops, empowering residents to live a better life,” said Ms. Moore. “As a former resident who has family and friends in public housing, it’s important to me that residents receive valuable services and opportunities that lead to a path to success.”

“Amanda is extremely dedicated to residents and her team,” noted Senior Director of NYCHA’s Office of Resident Initiatives Shanna Castillo. “She always goes the extra mile to make sure that residents receive quality services, and that her team is engaged and energized to do great work. I know that in this new role Amanda will continue to make gains to strengthen and expand REES’ work with our partners and residents.”

One of the most rewarding aspects of Ms. Moore’s job is seeing residents with whom she first worked at the community centers come to the REES office seeking new opportunities: “It’s wonderful to see residents come full circle. I recently met with a resident who graduated high school and was interested in a job training program through a REES partner organization. I never forget a face, and we recognized each other right away. It brought me a sense of gratitude. Public housing has amazing talent, amazing residents, and great stories. I always want to make sure that NYCHA residents are seen and heard.”
