Remembering Craig Williams: Dedicated Public Servant, Father, and Friend

I met Craig back in the early 90s in the beginning of our NYCHA careers in Brooklyn. Craig and I worked side by side as Burner Mechanics learning the importance of our newfound responsibilities. I immediately noticed how seriously Craig took his job; he was always professional, approachable, and helpful to all. During this time, Craig was very inspirational to me – he helped me advance in my career, contributing to my professional growth and success.

However, our paths diverged as we continued our career journeys within the agency (although we would occasionally check on each other). But regardless of where we were in the Authority,  Craig was always available to me to offer guidance when I needed it; he always took the time to lead me in the most helpful way. Craig remained the same over the years – he always had a gentle giant type of persona.

Recently, I had the awesome opportunity to work with Craig again in the Heating Management Services Department, and it was great! Amazingly, as our career paths reunited, nothing had changed about this man. He continued to be the same high-caliber, dedicated employee, understanding the critical role we play in our residents’ lives. As soon as he returned to the Heating Department, he hit the ground running full steam ahead, and it made me feel like we just picked up where we left off as colleagues and no time had passed. Craig was focused, determined, and on the path of success. He was very passionate about his work, regardless of his role, and I truly admired that about him.

Regrettably, I lost my colleague, my friend, my role model, and the selfless guiding light. On June 4, 2019, a day like no other day at work, Craig suffered a heart attack and was hospitalized. The love and support from colleagues were overwhelming, and I realized what this man really meant to me and others. Sadly, on the night of June 14,  I was notified that Craig had left this world. This was one of the most crushing moments of my life. I was devastated. Not only because I lost my friend,  but because we lost such a positive force within our department. Craig is someone I will never forget for as long as I live, and I will cherish all the lessons and advice he offered to me. I continue to pray for his family in this very dark time of their lives.
