NYCHA’s Leased Housing Department Honored

On April 20, NYCHA’s Leased Housing Department staff were honored for their efforts to issue Emergency Housing Vouchers (EHV). The recognition was from New Destiny, a New York City nonprofit that provides housing and services to survivors of domestic violence and their children.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded a limited number of EHV to NYCHA and the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development. Since July 2021, NYCHA’s Leased Housing Department (LHD) has issued over 8,800 EHV vouchers and processed more than 3,700 EHV rentals.

“It is great to have the team’s efforts acknowledged alongside our City partners,” said Lakesha Miller, Executive Vice President for Leased Housing. “EHV demanded collaboration and partnership from the very beginning. LHD is proud to be a part of the team that rose to the occasion and continues to push forward in making the EHV program a success.”

The EHV program helps house families and individuals who are experiencing or are at risk of homelessness or fleeing or attempting to flee domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, or human trafficking.

Alex Mathew, Director of LHD Brooklyn Client Services, who was among the NYCHA staff honored, described the honor as a highlight of his NYCHA career.

“It was such an honor to be recognized by New Destiny for my work on the Emergency Housing Voucher program,” said Mr. Mathew. “It’s a joy to work with a great team of staff, across multiple agencies, who have been serving the community and positively impacting the lives of so many New Yorkers. My team shares my passion and commitment to providing safe, sanitary, and affordable housing for these families. The work they do through NYCHA’s Leased Housing Department has made a significant impact on so many households, especially those in critical need of housing. My team and I are proud of the work we have accomplished. This acknowledgement means so much to me and is a highlight of my 30-year tenure with the New York City Housing Authority.”

The other NYCHA staff who were recognized included Lakesha Miller, Executive Vice President of Leased Housing; Lillian Harris, Vice President of Leased Housing; Melissa Renwick, Senior Advisor, Leased Housing; and Jourdan Neal-Grant, Assistant Director of Brooklyn Client Services.
