NYCHA’s Capital Projects Roundup: February

A variety of security-related upgrades were recently completed at all entrances and exits of NYCHA’s Johnson Houses in Manhattan. 

The Capital Projects Division (CPD) marked the completion of the nearly $3.5 million improvement project on February 28.  

CPD oversees more than $1 billion in construction projects across the Authority’s portfolio that are funded with federal, State, and City investments. The department works to preserve and modernize public housing for NYCHA residents through professional design and construction services that are carried out efficiently and with the highest degree of safety and quality.  

As part of enhanced security-related measures for residents and employees at Johnson Houses, CPD upgraded all building entrances and rear exits, including replacing all exterior doors and framing.  

The entrance areas received new stainless steel exterior structures, while galvanized hollow metal doors were installed at the rear exits of the buildings. Project work also involved the installation of new intercommunication systems, signage, and canopy roofing.  

The security project was funded by a federal grant.  

Also at Johnson Houses, construction is currently underway to install security-related lighting improvements along walkways, entrances, and gathering spaces across the development. Funded by a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development emergency capital grant, the project is slated to be completed by the end of this year.
