NYCHA Healthy Homes Staff Participate in ‘Stand-Down’ for Construction Safety Week

In recognition of Construction Safety Week (May 1 to 5), NYCHA Healthy Homes field staff and contractors participated in group discussions promoting various ways to ensure workplace safety.

The sessions, also known as “toolbox talks,” supported the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) National Safety Stand-Down campaign, which aims to raise awareness about fall hazards in the workplace to help prevent fall-related fatalities and injuries.

The weeklong campaign encourages agencies and employers to conduct a safety stand-down with workers by holding a toolbox talk or other activity to discuss job-related hazards, protective methods, and the company’s safety policies and goals.

NYCHA’s Healthy Homes Department noted that the safety stand-down was especially relevant for field staff and contractors who use equipment such as ladders, scaffolding, and scissor lifts. Supervisors and contractors from the Asbestos Department, Lead Hazard Control Department, and Office of Mold Assessment and Remediation organized toolbox talks with employees throughout the week to review fall hazard prevention, ladder safety reminders, and proper housekeeping measures under NYCHA’s Safe Walking/Working Surfaces advisories (see links below).

Employees review NYCHA’s Safe Walking/Working Surfaces Advisory and ladder safety reminders during Construction Safety Week.

NYCHA contractors who participated in the stand-down campaign included New York Insulation, Inc., Empire Control, Abatement Unlimited, Kam, Airtek Environmental, Total Quality Environmental, Liro, Sahara Construction, Enrich Products, TRC Companies, Barclay Water Management, Jemco Electric, and Trystate Mechanical.
