Kudos to NYCHA’s Financial Planning & Analysis Team

For the fourth consecutive year and for the fifth time, NYCHA received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) last August. GFOA created the award program in 1984 to recognize state and local governments that prepare budget documents of the highest quality, as established by the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgeting.

In a video message to the Authority, Chris Morrill, GFOA’s Executive Director, said:

The purpose of this award program is to encourage and assist governments to prepare comprehensive and understandable budget documents, to improve transparency and trust in government. To earn the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, the New York City Housing Authority met demanding program criteria. Such a record reflects a professionalism, commitment, and dedication of your organization’s leaders . . . Program reviewers in particular praised how you communicated your priorities and issues . . . We hope that this award to the New York City Housing Authority will serve as an example and encourage others to strive for the same high standards in their own budget documents.

NYCHA’s Department of Financial Planning & Analysis prepares the Authority’s annual budget. The “Budget Book” they developed was evaluated by an independent panel of budget experts and rated on 27 criteria, including its effectiveness as a policy statement, financial plan, operations guide, and communications device.

“This accomplishment demonstrates the dedication and expertise of my colleagues in the Department of Financial Planning & Analysis,” said Georgiana Okoroji, the Department’s Director. “We would also like to thank the many other NYCHA departments that collaborated with us by providing information and assistance vital to preparing the Budget Book. NYCHA’s budget is an important document that promotes transparency and provides clear information to the public about NYCHA’s operations and priorities in serving residents.”
