Upgrades Coming for 2,700 Residents
More than 2,700 NYCHA residents in Bushwick, Brooklyn, will see major repairs and renovations to their homes, scheduled to be completed in 2021.
Approximately 1,315 apartments at Hope Gardens, Palmetto Gardens, Bushwick II (Groups A & C), Bushwick II (Groups B & D), and Bushwick II CDA (Group E) will benefit from complete kitchen and bathroom renovations, heating systems upgrades, enhanced security systems, window replacements, and improvements to open spaces and common areas.
The upgrades are made possible through the Permanent Affordability Commitment Together (PACT) initiative, part of the Authority’s NYCHA 2.0 long-term plan, which shifts apartments to Section 8 funding to generate much-needed revenue for critical improvements. Development partners make repairs and manage the buildings, NYCHA retains ownership of the buildings and land, and residents retain their rights and affordability (rents remain at 30 percent of household income).
“Public housing residents across New York City are relying on us to address both their critical repair needs and secure affordable housing for their families – NYCHA 2.0 has created a path for the City to do both,” said NYCHA General Manager Vito Mustaciuolo. “We and our partners are focused on making sure that more residents can experience an improved quality of life in safe, healthy homes for generations to come.”
NYCHA’s development partners Pennrose LLC and Acacia Network secured approximately $400 million to address the repairs and upgrades for the 61 buildings involved, which will be completed in phases through 2021. Social services providers Acacia Network, RiseBoro Community Partnership, the Coalition for Hispanic Family Services, and the Bushwick United Housing Development Fund will provide on-the-ground services for the community.
PACT is one of three main tools under NYCHA 2.0 to help invest much-needed money into public housing infrastructure citywide while safeguarding long-standing tenant rights and protections, including affordability.
