NYCHA at the 53rd Annual New York City Marathon
Several NYCHA employees, including members of its very own Running Club, joined over 51,000 other runners competing in the third largest edition of the annual New York City Marathon to date.
The marathon, now in its 53rd year, began in Staten Island, and saw runners progress through Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx, before finishing up in Central Park. The runners braced the chilly November weather and were cheered along by tens of thousands of spectators scattered through each of the boroughs.
Ulyana Chuvasheva, a Project Manager in the A&CM CP Project Management Team 1 who ran the marathon, said that “the hardest part was training for six months.” This was her second New York City Marathon.
Ms. Chuvasheva’s training paid off – she managed to run the 26.2 miles in an impressive four hours and 16 minutes.
For Mohammed Al Kalam, a Housing Assistant in LHD Bronx Client Services, the 2023 New York City marathon was his first-ever marathon.
He dedicated this achievement to his father, who sadly passed away just days after Mr. Al Kalam ran the marathon.
Deputy Director of A&CM CP Program Management Harjit Singh also ran his first-ever marathon that day. Despite his fatigue, Mr. Singh will remember completing the marathon as a personal accomplishment: “The best part of the marathon was being cheered by New Yorkers, full of energy, across all five boroughs.”

Finally, for Michael Chan, a member of NYCHA’s Running Club and a Financial Planning and Analysis Manager on the A&CM CP Project Management Team 1, this year’s marathon was his ninth New York City marathon.
“The NYC Marathon is an experience like no other…where people of all ages, races, and religions from all over the world unite together,” Mr. Chan said.
He encourages others to sign up to join NYCHA’s Running Club and be part of an upcoming event.
“Training for the NYC Marathon takes time, dedication, and sacrifice, but I promise you the journey and adventure are worth it,” he noted.
