Streamlining and Sequencing Capital Repairs Across NYCHA
Dear Staff:
We recently wrote to inform you that NYCHA and the Citywide Council of Presidents (CCOP) signed a new MOA that officially recognizes the CCOP as the Authority-wide voice for residents and formalizes its role in advising on all areas of NYCHA’s portfolio. Specifically, the agreement establishes a framework for how NYCHA and CCOP will work together to enhance the operations and management of the Authority, amplify resident participation and better address the issues that are most important to the New Yorkers who call NYCHA home. It also outlines how NYCHA and CCOP will communicate, as we partner together to reimagine NYCHA’s future.
As another step forward in achieving these shared goals — and as part of our continual efforts to improve the conditions of New York City’s public housing — NYCHA and CCOP have also signed a joint letter urging Congress to fully fund NYCHA’s public housing infrastructure, modernization and capital projects for the first time in 40 years against the backdrop of a $40 billion deficit. We know that these capital needs are at the heart of what so many residents care about most, and we understand that these issues are central to NYCHA’s ability to improve developments across the five boroughs. The letter outlines the establishment of a transparent set of criteria for determining and sequencing the order of how infrastructure and property renovations can proceed. Using these criteria, NYCHA and CCOP developed a Site Restoration List to determine how NYCHA will sequence property renovations in the event NYCHA receives the full or a partial allocation of federal funds.
Again, CCOP is the duly elected jurisdiction-wide resident council that represents all of the public housing residents in NYCHA and is comprised of Resident Association (RA) presidents that bring valuable perspectives and ideas to the table about how NYCHA should move forward. We know that this will be the first of many joint endeavors between NYCHA and CCOP and, as a member of the NYCHA team, we thank you for your hard work in helping us to make NYCHA better.
