September Is National Preparedness Month

Do you know how to prepare for an emergency? Act now to prepare for the emergencies that could affect us where we live and work:

  1. Make an emergency plan. Discuss where family members will meet in the event of a disaster, exit routes, special accommodations, and other essentials.
  1. Pack a bag. Include important documents, keys, clothing, cash, first aid kit, water, nonperishable foods, and other items for your personal needs.
  1. Practice the plan.
  1. Prepare at least a week’s supply of survival essentials and think about stores being closed during the emergency. Include plenty of water, nonperishable food, first aid kits, and flashlights.
  1. New York City evacuates by zones, zone 1 being the most likely to flood. In the event of an evacuation you should know your zone. Don’t know yours? Find out here.
  1. If you have a disability and can’t evacuate on your own, call 311 for assistance. If you are on life support/life-sustaining equipment, you should register with your local electric utility company and have an alternate source of power.
  1. Use Notify NYC (www.nyc.gov/notifynyc) to stay informed. Visit https://www1.nyc.gov/site/em/ready/ready-new-york.page for additional resources that can help you prepare for a hurricane or any other emergency.
