Our Condolences to Our Colleague Leighton Brown

Dear Colleagues,

You may have heard that one of our colleagues, Maintenance Worker Leighton Brown, tragically lost his life on Saturday while working at Cypress Hills Houses during the storm. We are deeply saddened by this terrible loss and want to convey our heartfelt condolences to the entire NYCHA community, including Leighton’s family.

Leighton was beloved by all who knew him, and Cypress Hills Houses, where he spent most of his career, was like a second home to him. He always brought cheer to his colleagues, with his friendly demeanor and excellent sense of humor. And residents thought the world of him, praising his care, dedication, and positivity as well as his desire to always put NYCHA families first. Cypress Hills’ Resident Association President, James Alcivar, said that Leighton could always be counted on to make quality repairs at their development – even before the start of his shift – because he cared so much about his work. He was also extremely good at helping to get vacant apartments ready for turnover, so that new families could benefit from a NYCHA home.

We will always remember Leighton fondly, along with his contributions and his concern for the NYCHA community.

We stand together as a family at NYCHA, in both good times and bad. While tragedy brings us closer together today, our strength as a community and the light of our purpose will continue to lead the way.
