NYCHA Sustainability Recognized With DEI Impact Award

On September 20, NYCHA’s Sustainability Department became the first institution to win a Smart Energy Decisions DEI Impact Award.

Smart Energy Decisions, the first web-based information resource dedicated to addressing the information needs of large power customers, inaugurated its DEI Impact Awards program this year to honor efforts in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in clean energy. The winners were chosen by a panel of judges comprised of energy customer organizations and recognized industry experts. “Our goal in launching the DEI Impact Awards is to recognize the accomplishments of diverse groups within the clean energy community,” said Wes Doane, Vice President of Smart Energy Decisions.

“We are proud that Smart Energy Decisions has recognized our efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in how we engage and support NYCHA residents in our energy-efficiency and green workforce development initiatives,” said Shaan Mavani, NYCHA’s Chief Asset & Capital Management Officer. “In the coming years, we expect to see the results of these efforts scale as we work to decarbonize our buildings, improve waste management, and protect our campuses from the impacts of extreme weather, as part of our core mission to deliver quality housing and support economic mobility for New Yorkers.”

As the nation’s largest public housing authority, NYCHA – through the work spearheaded by its Sustainability Team within the Asset & Capital Management Division – is helping to address the climate crisis while tackling quality of life issues in NYCHA homes. NYCHA’s commitment to these issues is outlined in its updated Sustainability Agenda, published in September 2021. The Sustainability Agenda is NYCHA’s roadmap for creating healthier, safer, and more comfortable homes for all NYCHA residents while ensuring that the Authority itself operates sustainably and can continue to serve generations to come.

NYCHA’s Sustainability Agenda builds on a 20-year track record of successful energy-efficiency initiatives, with more than $1 billion in energy-efficiency construction projects ongoing today.
