NYCHA’s Comp Mod Program Awarded by the American Council of Engineering Companies of NY

On April 5, NYCHA Chief Executive Officer Lisa Bova-Hiatt accepted the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of New York’s Award of Merit on behalf of the Comprehensive Modernization program at ACEC’s 58th Annual Engineering Excellence Gala, held at the Hilton in Midtown Manhattan.

CEO Bova-Hiatt was recognized for showcasing outstanding leadership in public housing revitalization through NYCHA’s Comprehensive Modernization initiative. Known as Comp Mod, the innovative program has been launched at four developments to date to efficiently carry out holistic capital improvements, including major upgrades to mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems as well as top-to-bottom transformation of apartments (with design elements selected by residents). Comp Mod is led by Vice President of Comprehensive Modernization Michele Basic Moore, Director of Comprehensive Modernization Christopher D’Alimonte, and their NYCHA colleagues.

“Design-build is a useful project delivery tool, and we are proud to honor the New York City Housing Authority for employing the innovative design-build model in order to efficiently upgrade their aging infrastructure while minimizing disruption to their residents,” said John T. Evers, President and CEO of ACEC New York. “The agency’s Comprehensive Modernization initiative focuses on critical renovations that meet the specific needs of residents while improving overall sustainability and health with new energy-efficient systems and lead abatement, and CEO Lisa Bova-Hiatt and her team deserve recognition for setting a new standard for public housing modernization that will improve New York City’s quality of life for generations to come.”

“On behalf of my 10,000-plus colleagues and the hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers we serve, I would like to thank all of our partners here today – we would not be able to invest in NYCHA properties without your creative thinking and hard work,” Ms. Bova-Hiatt said in her award acceptance speech. “Last year, we invested more than $1 billion in public housing developments through our capital projects, working with many of the extraordinary firms in this room to do so. Additionally, many of you have worked tirelessly, contributing to the success of our PACT program, where a total of nearly $7 billion has been invested in NYCHA properties since its inception. Our Comprehensive Modernization program seeks to directly invest another $1 billion at a few selected developments, revitalizing these public housing properties for current and future generations.”

An ACEC New York hallmark for over half a century, the annual Engineering Excellence Awards gala — the “Academy Awards” of the consulting engineering industry — honors member firms for design achievements of superior skill and ingenuity.

Each year, over 50 firms submit projects that are judged on a rigorous set of criteria, including complexity, innovation, and value to society, highlighting the significant contributions consulting engineers make to the built environment.
