NYCHA Celebrates New Affordable Housing for Veterans and Young Adults
NYCHA staff helped cut the ribbon at the grand opening for Walton House, a new supportive housing development in the Bronx for formerly homeless veterans and young adults. NYCHA provided project-based Section 8 vouchers for the entire development.
Walton House is New York City’s first supportive housing development to open under Mayor Bill de Blasio’s NYC 15/15 Initiative to provide 15,000 units of supportive housing over 15 years. The $36-million, 10-story building features 89 apartments: 56 for formerly homeless veterans and 33 for young adults, including 40 percent whom identify as LGTBQ.
“NYCHA is proud to support this project by providing housing subsidy through the Project-Based Section 8 program,” said Lakesha Miller, NYCHA’s Executive Vice President for Leased Housing. “No one will pay more than 30 percent of their income, and it will preserve affordable housing for generations, especially for our veterans and young adults who most need our help.”
Walton House was developed by Jericho Project, a nonprofit dedicated to ending homelessness, and B&B Urban, a long-time developer of affordable and supportive housing. Jericho Project will provide on-site support to residents, including career counseling, job placements, mental health services, and recreational activities.
Also in attendance at the celebration were NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development Commissioner Maria Torres-Springer and Human Resources Administration Commissioner Steven Banks.
