Moving NYCHA Forward

Dear Colleagues,

On January 31, Mayor Bill de Blasio, HUD Secretary Ben Carson, and the Southern District of New York (SDNY) announced a settlement to improve the lives of the 400,000 New Yorkers who call NYCHA home.

As part of this agreement, the City will invest an additional $2.2 billion in the Authority, and HUD and SDNY will select a federal monitor who will help support NYCHA operations.

Together, these measures will help move NYCHA forward.

Over the last year, we have started the important work of implementing overdue reforms to improve accountability and transparency at the Authority and improved on key measures that impact residents’ quality of life.

But while we have begun to make real strides to improve heat restoration time, expedite capital repairs, and tackle lead, mold, and other persistent issues in our developments, there’s more work to be done – and it needs to be done faster.

In the coming weeks, Mayor de Blasio will announce a permanent Chair and CEO to run the Authority and work in conjunction with our federal monitor to streamline repairs and improve quality of life for all of our residents.

We look forward to our continued partnership with Mayor de Blasio, the federal government, and our colleagues across the city as we continue to work to best serve our residents.
