Employees Honored by City Hall for Rat Reduction Efforts
NYCHA staff members were recognized recently by Deputy Mayor for Operations Laura Anglin for their hard work helping to reduce the rat population at developments where they were most problematic.
On July 29, NYCHA staff, along with employees from the city’s Departments of Education, Mental Health and Hygiene, Sanitation, and Parks & Recreation, were singled out for their dedication and remarkable contributions to decrease rat infestation levels in key neighborhoods throughout the city as part of the Neighborhood Rat Reduction (NRR) program.
Launched in 2017, NRR is a multi-agency initiative to reduce rat populations by targeting specific communities where they are most challenging. Thanks to NRR, the 60 initial developments in the program experienced a 73 percent decline in rat burrows.
“The people recognized do an amazing job treating, planning, and doing the hard reduction work that improves the lives of New Yorkers every day,” said Elena Tenchikova, Director of Prevention & Intervention Strategies. “I also want to recognize the NYCHA teams that supported these efforts to make NYCHA developments healthier and cleaner communities, including Analytics, Capital and Sustainability, Resident Engagement, the many front-line staff members doing the work regardless of the weather or task, and NYCHA leadership.”
