On June 13, NYCHA’s Chinese-American Association (CAA) and more than one hundred guests and participants gathered at 90 Church Street for a Dragon Boat Festival, a vibrant, annual celebration of Chinese history and culture.
Nancy Lam, CAA Chair and Chief of NYCHA’s Leased Housing Department, kicked off the event by informing attendees that they could watch dragon boat races – an essential festival custom – on August 11 and 12 in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens. Attendees were then treated to a presentation on the history of the celebration, “zongzi” (rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves traditionally eaten during the festival), and a song from a former CAA board member.
