Spotlight on NYCHA’s Chinese-American Association
The Chinese-American Association (CAA) is one of many employee associations at NYCHA. The association was created almost three decades ago to promote Chinese language and culture and to strengthen bonds among co-workers.
Currently, the CAA has more than 200 members, including several retired employees who remain active in the association.
In May, the CAA observed Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month by participating in a gardening project at Smith Houses, a welcome return to in-person gatherings. Before the pandemic, CAA organized various cultural events throughout the year, such as biannual luncheons in a Chinatown restaurant, financial and health seminars, a Mid-Autumn Festival, Tai Chi demonstrations, and a Dragon Boat Festival.
“We are proud to have participated in NYCHA’s gardening project at Smith Houses,” said Larry Sit, an Administrative Staff Analyst at NYCHA and CAA board member/treasurer. He noted that the CAA is also active in various philanthropic efforts, in New York City and abroad.
Qi Zhang, Deputy Director of Accounts Payable and Utility Management, and NYCHA CAA president, said that in 2022 the association will resume some of the annual celebrations that were paused due to the pandemic: “The planning of CAA programs in the coming months is focused on the introduction of rich Chinese culture,” said Ms. Zhang. “We plan to launch various community events to help people in need and organize outings to promote CAA members’ physical health.”
NYCHA employees who wish to join the CAA, or renew their membership, can find the application form here.
