Ebony Johnson, Legislative Coordinator in NYCHA’s Office of Intergovernmental Relations

Former Ingersoll Houses resident Ebony Johnson, who works as a Legislative Coordinator in NYCHA’s Office of Intergovernmental Relations, received a NYCHA-CUNY Scholarship in 2012. Ms. Johnson studied political science and public policy at Hunter College and used the scholarship money toward tuition, school supplies, and textbooks. She graduated in 2013.

“I gained way more than just the scholarship,” Ms. Johnson said. “I was able to develop a strong mentoring relationship with professionals. I really connected with the idea of giving back to my community. I always say the award ceremony was a changing point in my life. There was something transformative about having my academic achievement celebrated and simultaneously acknowledging my upbringing and my commitment to public service. If anyone is thinking of applying, I would say it is a phenomenal opportunity to witness how CUNY, NYCHA, and many other amazing partners are in your corner. We all could use a cheerleader.”

The scholarship is open to authorized NYCHA residents currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at CUNY with 30 or more credits and a minimum 3.0 GPA. Residents may apply on NYCHA’s Self-Service Portal. Visit on.nyc.gov/nycha-cuny for more information.
