Ready to Improve Community Health
On February 25, NYCHA staff joined partners from the College of Staten Island and Staten Island Performing Provider System (SI PPS) to celebrate five residents who completed Community Health Worker training and will soon be out in their communities helping residents navigate the healthcare system and working to improve health outcomes in Staten Island.
The residents, who live in Stapleton, West Brighton, Mariner’s Harbor, and Todt Hill Houses, received full scholarships from SI PPS to attend the College of Staten Island to earn Community Health Worker training certificates. They completed 54 hours of training, which included learning about health systems navigation, care coordination, and chronic diseases prevalent in Staten Island, such as asthma, diabetes, depression, and substance abuse disorder.
“Every day we see how many NYCHA residents are not only driven to succeed but are also committed to keeping their communities healthy,” said NYCHA Executive Vice President for Community Engagement and Partnerships Sideya Sherman. “We thank SIPPS and the College of Staten Island for their partnership in the Community Health Worker Certificate program, and for helping empower public housing residents improve their lives and the lives of their neighbors.”
NYCHA’s Health Initiatives unit and Office of Resident Economic Empowerment and Sustainability worked with the partners to recruit residents for the training, as part of ongoing work to connect residents to jobs and training in the growing community health worker field.
