NYCHA NAACP Branch’s Black Health and Wellness Event
On February 23, NYCHA’s branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) hosted an event focused on Black health and wellness as part of their Black History Month celebrations.
The event was held at NYCHA’s offices at 1200 Waters Place in the Bronx. Guest speakers included Chief Operating Officer Daniel Sherrod; former NAACP New York State Conference Chair of Criminal Justice and CUNY professor Dr. Leroy Gadsden; and Troy Dixon, Community Coordinator in NYCHA’s Resident Engagement Department. They discussed the importance of physical and mental health, especially amidst the pandemic.
Lynn Spivey, President of the NYCHA NAACP branch and an Administrative Staff Analyst in the Heating Management Services Department, kicked off the festivities with a prayer and the Black National Anthem. Several NYCHA employees were honored, including NYCHA’s Vice President for Operations Angela Gadson-Floyd, Senior Director for Performance Tracking and Analytics Sybille Louis, Director of Learning and Development Cherry McCutchen, Deputy Director of Operations Carl Walton, Vice President for Operations Marvin Walton, and Deputy Director of Heating Management Services Department Keevin Wells.
The more than 90 attendees enjoyed soul foods and desserts as well as live performances from their colleagues Michael Brown, Juanita Brown, and Pamela Boylan. At the conclusion of the event, Ms. Spivey promoted the NAACP’s Voting Is Power (VIP) initiative, in which members go to various developments and help residents register to vote.
