NYCHA Launches Mold Busters
Dear Colleagues,
As you are all aware, the age of our buildings and the condition of our infrastructure makes NYCHA vulnerable to mold. However, the battle against mold is one we intend to win. Next week, we are launching a program to combat mold at NYCHA developments citywide called “Mold Busters.”
Mold Busters originally began in May 2017 as a year-long pilot program at 38 developments to test a new process and tools for identifying and treating mold. Based on the results of the pilot, we have updated our mold inspection protocol and established a new and comprehensive standard procedure for remediating mold.
Mold Busters provides staff with new hands-on training, in-depth knowledge about the root causes of mold, and new tools to effectively and efficiently identify and remediate mold. The program also includes more accountability by having staff document the process when responding to mold work orders, a faster timeline for repairs and remediation to be completed, and follow-up inspections after work is done to ensure there has been no recurrence of mold.
We are also partnering with other City agencies and health partners to educate residents on how to identify and report mold conditions and help us prevent mold from recurring in their apartments.
Working together, we’ll continue to improve services and quality of life for our residents.
Sincerely,
Stanley Brezenoff, Interim Chair & CEO
