NextGen Computing at NYCHA
Say hello to new, top-of-the-line computers!
All NYCHA desktop computers, approximately 3,000 at developments and 3,500 central office computers, will be replaced with new, 23-inch-screen Dell OptiPlex 5040 computers as part of the NextGen Office program.
“We are trying to improve how we do things by digitizing and automating more,” said NYCHA Vice President for Enterprise Technology Portfolio Management John Saggese. “We’re setting the platform for better collaboration among the staff.”
New computers were installed at the Staten Island developments in June and will be brought to the other boroughs, including the central offices, through September.
Each new desktop will feature Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 10, as well as modern versions of all the programs in the Office 365 suite (such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel). The IT Department has worked hard to ensure a smooth transition.
“We’re upgrading the same tools you already use. If you use Microsoft Word, you will still have Microsoft Word,” said Senior IT Program Manager Darnes Taveras. “IT wants to be a partner to the development offices, helping them do their jobs.”
Online Microsoft training called BrainStorm will be available to those who need it, and the NYCHA Help Desk is ready to assist. Instructions on how to back up the old computers will be sent out prior to the scheduled installation (the old computers will be recycled in an environmentally friendly manner).
The IT Department conducted three rounds of testing to ensure that all NYCHA applications will run smoothly on the new computers. Other improvements include easier sharing of Word documents and split-screen capabilities for annual reviews, which will allow for more effective collaboration among staff.
