New Boilers for 11 NYCHA Developments
Nine new boiler plants will be constructed at 11 NYCHA developments with aging boilers, which will improve heat and hot water service for 24,000 residents. Construction on the new boiler plants will begin at the selected developments this year and is scheduled to be completed by 2022.
NYCHA recently selected seven contractors to install the nine new boiler plants: Framan Mechanical, WDF, C.D.E. Air Conditioning Co., Navillus Inc., Kordun Construction Corp., Richards Plumbing & Heating, and Rocon Plumbing & Heating Corp. The nearly $300 million in contracts include $100 million in federal funding and $200 million from the City. The de Blasio Administration has invested an unprecedented $4.3 billion commitment to improving NYCHA’s infrastructure.
“Mayor de Blasio’s ongoing investment in NYCHA’s infrastructure is critical to meeting the day-to-day needs of residents and ensuring the long-term reliability of public housing,” said NYCHA Interim Chair and CEO Kathryn Garcia. “These enhancements are just one of many major changes already underway to improve the quality of life for our residents.”
The new boiler plants are one component of a broader effort to improve and upgrade heating systems at NYCHA developments. These improvements include separating the heat and hot water systems to decrease strain on boilers, reduce the chance that residents lose heat and hot water services at the same time, and allow staff to repair one system without affecting the other system.
“Our dedicated staff continues to reduce the amount of time our residents experience heat service interruptions in the face of decades of disinvestment from our heating systems,” said NYCHA General Manager Vito Mustaciuolo. “New boiler plants at some of our most impacted developments will be a gamechanger, and we thank Mayor de Blasio for his administration’s dedication to improving NYCHA residents’ quality of life.”
The new boiler plants will be installed at:
- Morris I, Morris II, and Morrisania Houses (Navillus Inc.)
- Taft Houses (Framan Mechanical)
- Cypress Hills Houses (Kordun Construction Corp.)
- Farragut Houses (Richards Plumbing & Heating)
- Sotomayor Houses (WDF)
- Rangel Houses (Richards Plumbing & Heating)
- Fiorentino Plaza (Rocon Plumbing & Heating Corp.)
- Long Island Baptist Houses (C.D.E. Air Conditioning Co.)
- Robinson Houses (Framan Mechanical)
Ahead of the current heating season, NYCHA overhauled its strategy to reduce outages and restore heating faster, which included:
- Hiring additional heating staff;
- Improving customer service;
- Purchasing new mobile boilers;
- Installing new windows; and
- Securing contractors to oversee heating plants at select developments.
NYCHA will allocate nearly $1 billion over the next five years to replace 314 boilers, improving heat and hot water services for nearly 158,000 residents.
