Combatting Malfeasance

Dear Colleagues,

As you may be aware, today the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, together with the NYC Department of Investigation (DOI), arrested numerous NYCHA employees and retirees on charges of bribery.

In recent years, the NYCHA Inspector General has mounted robust investigations to root out malfeasance at the Authority. NYCHA leadership works in partnership and full cooperation with the Inspector General and DOI on these cases.

NYCHA has zero tolerance for fraud, bribery, and general abuse of our mission, and we will continue to work with our partners on ridding the Authority of malfeasance. The individuals allegedly involved in these acts violated the trust of our residents, their fellow NYCHA colleagues, and all New Yorkers. These actions counter everything we stand for as public servants and will not be tolerated in any form.

Since NYCHA signed the 2019 HUD Agreement, we have achieved many significant milestones. We implemented policy reforms and established best practices in the pillar areas of lead, mold, heating, pests/waste, elevators, and HUD inspections. Additionally, we created NYCHA’s first-ever Compliance; Environmental Health and Safety; and Quality Assurance departments. We also made major changes to NYCHA’s Board and executive management structures as well as NYCHA’s property portfolios and operations. Importantly, we have remained vigilant to ensure integrity in every area of our work.

While it is a difficult day in NYCHA history, we will not allow bad actors to disrupt our progress or undermine our achievements. We remain proud to work side by side with all of you, every day, in service to our city’s public housing residents.

Sincerely,
