Celebrating NYCHA Heroes: Redfern Houses

“Luis Hernandez, Property Maintenance Superintendent, and Shaquana Ramirez, Assistant Superintendent of Buildings, are the true meaning of NYCHA unsung heroes.
“Mr. Hernandez has been with NYCHA for over 30 years. When most of us are fast asleep, Mr. Hernandez begins his day daily at 4 a.m. when he leaves his home to manage two NYCHA developments: Queensborough South Houses and Redfern Houses. He can be seen onsite serving residents day in and day out without skipping a beat. When asked why, he said, ‘This is where I grew up (in NYCHA). I give back because I understand. I do it because I know how my residents feel; I don’t want them to think we forgot about them.’“Ms. Ramirez has been with NYCHA for just over eight years and has been holding down the fort with her partner, Mr. Hernandez, at Redfern. With no Supervisor of Caretakers, she has been wearing two hats. Mrs. Ramirez ensures that every day, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Sunday, that coverage is always available at Redfern, from Caretakers to Maintenance. She does this all with a heart of gold and a smile on her face.
