Celebrating Jewish American Heritage Month at NYCHA
The Organization of Jewish Employees at NYCHA, Batei Tsibur, gathered on May 21 in the 90 Church Street 5th Floor Ceremonial Room to celebrate Jewish Heritage Month, bringing the community together to share a meal, laugh, and learn.
The luncheon featured a medley of options, such as knishes, rice, potatoes, egg roll-style bites, and clementines, as well as a variety of educational materials, including videos. Batei Tsibur’s leader, Daniel Mahpour, a Computer Specialist in the Information Technology Department, welcomed attendees, noting how Batei Tsibur has been serving the NYCHA community for 50 years and highlighting its offerings, such as free Hebrew lessons.

The May 21 celebration featured a luncheon, an engaging presentation, and an opportunity for members and guests
to reconnect with the Batei Tsibur community.
Guest speaker Jaime Cohen, Director of Education at the Eldridge Street Synagogue, then delivered an engaging presentation on the history of the Lower East Side synagogue, which was a central institution during the period between 1880 and 1924, when so many of today’s American Jewish families first arrived on these shores. Through vintage and current photos and historic artifacts, Ms. Cohen described the evolution of the Lower East Side as well as the synagogue, including its restoration.
Mr. Mahpour then closed the event by reminding attendees about how important they are to the Batei Tsibur community.
