Building Their Careers
Twenty-seven NYCHA residents took their first steps toward careers in construction: They successfully graduated from the NYCHA Resident Training Academy (NRTA) Construction track.
The NRTA, managed by NYCHA’s Office of Resident Economic Empowerment and Sustainability (REES), provides residents with training opportunities and job placement assistance for careers in the construction, janitorial services, and maintenance fields.
REES partners with employment training providers in the city on the NRTA, including Brooklyn Workforce Innovations (BWI) and the New York City College of Technology (City Tech).
To successfully graduate from the NRTA Construction track, these 27 residents attended over 250 hours of job readiness and hard-skills training, which included OSHA 30, Asbestos Awareness, Suspended Scaffolding, Flagger Certification, and more. The NRTA is a New York State Department of Labor-approved direct entry program, which means graduates can be referred to participating union apprenticeships as well as employment opportunities in the industry.
Launched in 2010 and funded by the Robin Hood Foundation, the NRTA has helped many residents gain careers with growth opportunities: of the 2,280 NRTA graduates, 90 percent have been placed into jobs.
