Breaking Ground on Affordable Housing for Seniors
On September 10, NYCHA staff attended the groundbreaking ceremony of Betances Residence, a new senior affordable housing development in the Bronx being developed by Breaking Ground, New York’s largest supportive housing provider.
NYCHA leased the site of the development (which is on underutilized Authority land) and will also provide 151 Section 8 vouchers for it. All of the building’s apartments will be for seniors who were formerly homeless and are low-income; 26 of the apartments are preferential for current NYCHA residents. There will be senior-specific programming and onsite medical services to help residents remain active and healthy.
The building will also feature a 24-hour attended lobby, security system, laundry room, digital library and computer lab, multipurpose room for events and programming, and landscaped courtyard and terrace spaces. A community space in the building will be occupied by the DreamYard Project, a Bronx-based nonprofit that creates arts and education opportunities for underserved youth.
Betances Residence is scheduled to open in 2021.
