Here are a couple of events NYCHA organizations held to commemorate Women’s History Month:
The Caribbean American Association hosted “Caribbean Women Who Paved the Way for Women Everywhere,” on March 28 in the Ceremonial Room. The event featured colorful and informative posters on Caribbean and Caribbean American women, including Antiguan writer Jamaica Kinkaid; Jamaican poet Louise Bennett-Coverley; politician Shirley Chisholm, whose parents were from Barbados and Guyana; Haiti’s first woman prime minister Claudette Werleigh, and more.
“We thought that the voices and achievements of the Caribbean American women help to ensure that their stories are heard, and their contributions are acknowledged,” said Paula Flynn, Vice President of the Caribbean American Association and Administrative Manager in the Performance Tracking and Analytics Department. “Caribbean American women bring a rich tapestry of cultures, traditions and perspective to the table. Recognizing their diversity enriches society and fosters inclusivity. Sharing the stories of Caribbean American women can inspire others.”
NYCHA’s National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Women in NAACP (WIN) Committee partnered with Share for Life Inc. to host a virtual discussion on mental health and wellness, featuring insights from the empowering book “Hey Sis, Are You Okay?” This event launched a new campaign between the two organizations, “She Builds: Beyond the Bricks,” which seeks to empower women living at NYCHA developments with the tools and resources they need to thrive in their personal and professional lives.
“We’re excited to embark on this journey of empowerment, collaboration, and transformation as we work towards creating positive change in the lives of women across New York City,” said Lynn Spivey, President of the NYCHA NAACP branch and Administrative Staff Analyst in NYCHA’s Heating Management Services Department. “The She Builds campaign brings together two powerhouse organizations dedicated to uplifting and supporting women in our community and will leverage the expertise and resources of both of our organizations to deliver impactful programming tailored to the unique needs of women in NYCHA developments.”
